Are you looking to increase the curb appeal of your home? With all those April showers on their way, it’s hard to beat the variety and colour that flowers can bring!
Also, don’t think for one minute that just because you’ve never grown any yourself that you can’t start now. We’re going to cover the whole spectrum, from the easiest flowers to some that require a little more care.
However, Before we start here’s a quick refresher:
Annuals
Flowers that grow and die in a single season or year. While you do have to replace them more often, they offer the best season-long and showy colours.
Perennials
Instead of dying at the onset of the freezing season, the roots of these plants stay alive, so they regrow when things get warmer. These types of flowers will be in bloom for less time, but it’s hard to beat their “plant and forget” nature!
Easy Street
Whoever said that growing flowers had to be difficult? Here are a few of our favourite flowers that even first-time growers will have an easy time with.
Catmint
A beautiful lavender-blue flower that can withstand drought, heat, or shade. Catmint is an easy-to-grow perennial that will have your garden full of colour (and butterflies). In fact, they’re so easy to grow that you may actually want to pot them separately, so they don’t invade the whole garden!
Sunflower
There’s a reason everyone knows what these look like and everybody grows them. Sunflowers are an annual plants that will survive in just about any soil, as long as it isn’t water-logged. Plant them in the sun and watch them reach for the sky!
Cosmos
Many people consider Cosmos the peak when it comes to the easiest flowers to grow. They are annuals that require little to no maintenance, can grow in poor soil, and will survive drought once they’re grown. You can also find different varieties of varying lengths to fit your garden.

On Your Mark
If you’re hoping to see some flowers bloom as quickly as possible, these are the ones you should go for.
Clematis
Available in a multitude of colours including pink, purple, and white, Clematis bloom quickly and grow large. These hardy climbing vines can grow up to 30 feet in just a few months!
Coral Honeysuckle
Add another burst of colour with these fast-growing perennials. They can grow 10 to 15 feet in a single season and will have your yard filled with sweet scents and hummingbirds!
Red Twig Dogwood
We know we’re heading into spring, but Red Twig Dogwood will also help your yard in the winter. It grows fast and many people love how the bark looks in the winter once all the leaves have fallen off!
